The impact of the Iraq war and occupation on Delaware and surrounding counties in the Brandywine Valley is the focus of the exhibit Eyes Wide Open. This exhibit is presented to the public as a Veteran’s Day Memorial, and features almost 20 pairs of combat boots memorializing the US troops from the state of Delaware, Cecil County MD, Salem County NJ, and Chester and Delaware Counties in PA who have fallen in the Iraq war. A display of shoes will represent the Iraqi civilian casualties.

Local peacemakers affiliated with Wilmington Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers) are sponsoring the exhibit Eyes Wide Open which will be traveling next to Wilmington Friends School in Alapocas.

AFSC, an international social justice organization, originally created Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost of War to illustrate the lives lost in the war in Iraq. The national exhibit now includes more than 2,500 pairs of combat boots representing U.S. military casualties, along with over 3,000 pairs of shoes memorializing a small fraction of the Iraqi civilians who have been killed in the conflict. The Eyes Wide Open exhibit, which first opened in Chicago with 500 pairs of boots in January 2004, continues to grow as the death toll rises. The tour has been to more than sixty cities across the country, including Boston, Dallas, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, New York City, Orlando, and Washington DC.

Eyes Wide Open is free and open to the public, although donations will be accepted. Further details of the exhibit can be found at www.afsc.org/midatlantic/baltimore
